Ch-ch-chew a ch-ch-chia

What do Bart Simpson, Shrek and President Obama have in common?  Well, besides great stage presence, they have all been immortalized as Chia Pets.  And while you probably know the Chia Pet as the invariably re-gifted Secret Santa present, the chia seed that makes this high-larious novelty gift possible is one of the most nutritious foods out there. Yep, that’s a superfood growing out of Bart Simpson’s head. Who knew?

Chia seeds are high in antioxidants (more than blueberries!), very rich in omega-3 fatty acids (more than flax seeds.), and chock-full of calcium (more than milk) and phosphorus, magnesium, manganese, copper, iron, molybdenum, niacin, and zinc.

And here’s more good news, not only are they a superfood, chia seeds can help you lose some of those holiday pounds because they are rich in fiber leaving you full for longer.

FYI, before they were used as a Shrek toupé, chia seeds were the basic survival ration of pre-Columbian Aztec warriors. (If they can sustain an Aztec Warrior fighting for his life, they should help me make it through spin class.)

So, how do you eat them? Try sprinkling chia seeds on cereal, yogurt, salads or oatmeal. You can also use them in smoothies and even your favorite stir-fry.
